Pascal’s principle states that when pressure is applied to a confined liquid, pressure changes occur in the liquid. With hydraulic machines, the pressure in the liquid is applied by a piston which works like a pump to generate a mechanical force.

The hydraulic press process begins when hydraulic fluid is forced into a double-acting piston. The compressive force inside the smaller hydraulic cylinder pushes the fluid into the larger cylinder, where it applies more force and pressure. The movement of the larger piston forces fluid back into the smaller piston cylinder.
The passage of fluid between the two pistons creates increased pressure which creates a mechanical force to drive the hydraulic press anvil down onto the workpiece, which deforms to create the desired shape. Once the movement is complete, the pressure is released and the anvil returns to its original position.

The components of a hydraulic press include two cylinders, two pipes and two pistons. One of the cylinders is the plunger and the other is the plunger; they are connected by a chamber filled with hydraulic oil.

Hydraulic machinery pumps are positive displacement pumps, which means that they deliver a constant amount of fluid with each pumping cycle. Positive displacement pumps can be fixed or variable, with fixed pumps operating at a constant speed, while variable pumps change speed and can be reversed.
The reason piston pumps are best for hydraulic presses is their ability to work in high pressure hydraulic systems. Due to its low fluid leakage, the pump operates at high volume levels. Types of piston pumps include axial, curved and radial pumps.
The number of cylinders in a hydraulic press varies depending on its design. The role of the cylinder is to generate the compressive force which drives the anvil and die.
